In 2008 the Federal Government invited youth leaders from across the country to Canberra for the 2020 Youth Summit. Over two days the delegates discussed a variety of topics – from boosting innovation and industry to national security – culminating in a youth communiqué to the Prime Minister Kevin Rudd outlining their vision for 2020 Australia.
Despite awareness of the disproportionate level of Indigenous juveniles inside justice and detention systems, programs implemented to address this issue have failed to reduce the high incarceration rates of Indigenous youth.
Earlier this year, AYAC conducted a survey of young people in remote areas of Australia asking for their experiences in employment and views on what could be changed to increase their workplace participation.
The survey showed that remote youth unemployment levels are disproportionately high, with responses showing a significant disparity between the rate of national and remote youth unemployment.
