APPLICATIONS ARE NOW OPEN FOR YOUNG PEOPLE TO JOIN THE AUSTRALIAN GOVERNMENT’S YOUTH STEERING COMMITTEE.

The Youth Steering Committee is an opportunity to work with the Minister for Youth and the Australian Government to deliver Engage! A strategy to include young people in the decisions we make.

The Youth Steering Committee will include 14 members between the ages of 12 and 25 from across Australia. You can apply now for 1 of 7 positions on the Youth Steering Committee for a term of up to 2 years. The other 7 positions on the Youth Steering Committee will be for existing members of the Youth Steering Committee.  

WHAT WILL I DO?

The Youth Steering Committee will work with the Office for Youth on the Australian Government’s new strategy Engage! A strategy to include young people in the decisions we make. This will include providing advice to the Office for Youth about the design and delivery of actions in Engage!

You will also team up with the Office for Youth to provide advice to the Australian Government about policies and programs for young people. The Youth Steering Committee will receive training and get access to professional development so that you feel comfortable and confident to participate in meetings.

The Youth Steering Committee is supported by the Australian Youth Affairs Coalition (AYAC) and the Office for Youth.

WHO CAN APPLY?

If you are a young person aged between 12 and 24 you can apply to join the Youth Steering Committee. You do not need prior experience on an advisory group, board or even volunteering to join. We are looking for young people with diverse backgrounds, experiences and skills.

We are looking for applications from young people with diverse backgrounds and lived experiences, including First Nations young people, LGBTIQ+ young people, young people with disability, refugee and migrant young people, young carers and young people who live in regional, rural and remote areas of Australia.

To join the Youth Steering Committee you must be available to attend at least 1 online meeting around every 2 months. You will also be expected to attend 3 meetings in Canberra including the first meeting between 12–16 August 2024. Your travel, accommodation and meals will be paid for by AYAC. You will also be paid an honorarium in recognition of your contributions.

HOW DO I APPLY?

The online application form for the Youth Steering Committee will be open from Tuesday 23rd April 2024 and will close at 5:00PM AEST on Sunday, 19 May 2024.

To apply you will be required to share information about your background, location and any accessibility requirements.

You will also be required to answer the following application questions:

  • How would you use your lived experience and skills to represent young people on the Youth Steering Committee?

  • How would you collaborate with other members of the Youth Steering Committee at meetings and provide advice to OFY about how to deliver Engage!?

  • What type of advisory group or other volunteering experience do you have?

TIPS FOR YOUR APPLICATION

— You should write and edit your responses in a separate document before you copy and paste them into the online application form.

— Your responses should be short and you should use simple language.

— You can use the STAR model to help write your responses. STAR stands for Situation, Task, Action, Result. You can read more about the STAR model.
